HP Labs Japan hires Kamae, Vice President from NTT Labs
************************************************************************
Takahiko Kamae, former vice president and executive manager
of the Human Interface Laboratories of Nippon Telegram and
Telephone Corporation (NTT), has been appointed to the new position
of Director of Information Research at HP Laboratories Japan (HPLJ).
He will report to Nobuo Mikoshiba, director of HPLJ.
Kamae has done pioneering work in the areas of user interfaces,
artificial intelligence and software to increase the
effectiveness of organizations. In his most recent position, he
developed B-ISDN multimedia terminals using workstations and
personal computers. "Dr. Kamae will play a major role
in planning strategy and programs for HP at the international level,
particularly in areas relating to multimedia systems," said Joel
Birnbaum, vice president for R&D and director of HP Labs.
HPLJ has thus far focused on applied research in the physical
sciences, including photonics, integrated-circuit testing and low
temperature electronics. Kamae will expand its work to include
computer science research, working closely with HPL's laboratories
in Palo Alto and Bristol, England.

NEW IDENTITY AND CHARTER FOR STANFORD PARK DIVISION
The new name for the Stanford Park Division, which relocates
from Palo Alto to the Santa Clara, California, site the weekend
of May 29, was unveiled to employees at a ceremony on April 1.
The name, Video Communications Division (VID), reflects the
division's new emphasis on the digital video market and is
effective immediately.
Under its new charter, VID will leverage its measurement
capabilities, together with HP's strengths in computation
and communication, into two categories of digital video
products:
o digital video equipment for video production,
post-production and broadcast houses;
o products needed to generate, carry and receive video
images over the new digital "highway" infrastructure which is
currently under development worldwide.
Transfer of the division's former product lines to the
Microwave Instruments Division in Rohnert Park, California, and the
Queensferry Microwave Division in South Queensferry, Scotland,
is virtually completed.
Stanford Park Division, now VID, is HP's oldest division.
Its name came from Stanford University's industrial park where
Hewlett-Packard built a complex of buildings at 150l Page Mill
Road in 1957. The original Microwave Division at that
location in 1973 split into the Stanford Park Division and the
first division to be located in Santa Rosa, California. The Spokane
Division then split off from the Stanford Park Division in 1980.
"This division represents the best of what HP is about," said
General Manager Jim Olson, pointing out that it has been renewed three
times and each time grown back up to a multi-million dollar business.
"You've made tremendous contributions to HP." The division's new charter
offers a great potential for growth, he told employees. "We're
absolutely in the right place at the right time."
VID will be introducing 14 new products at the National
Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, later this
month. Earlier this year, the division announced that it plans
to develop and manufacture broadcast encoders for the
Zenith/AT&T Digital Spectrum Compatible (HDTV) system now under
consideration for adoption as a new standard.

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 22, 1993--Hewlett-Packard Company and Micro
Resources, Inc. (MRI) announced they will work together to offer MRI's
leading software applications and services for the telecommunications
industry with HP's industry-leading UNIX-system-based workstations and
business servers.
Target customers include the North American public telecommunications
network service providers--such as the regional Bell operating companies
(RBOCs), independent telephone companies, Bell Canada and their
respective subsidies and affiliates--as well as their network software
suppliers, such as AT&T, Northern Telecom, Bellcore, Siemens Nixdorf,
and Ericsson.
MRI will provide its Switch Team software throughout the United States
and Canada, and will provide systems integration services at locations
within the Midwest.
Switch Team is a UNIX-system and X Window System-based tool for network
managers to consolidate multiple operating systems onto a single
console, where they can be viewed in windows on the screen. The software
will be available on the HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstations and the
HP 9000 Series 800 business servers.
"Within the rapidly changing telecom industry, more and more critical
network facilities are being managed and controlled by fewer employees.
The downsized management team is strongly motivated to install the
latest in open systems based network management centers in order to
maintain the quality of service demanded by the marketplace," said
Phil Garrett, senior account executive at MRI.
MRI, founded in 1984, is a leader in UNIX systems integration and value-
added solutions for the telecommunications industry. MRI's expertise
in UNIX and networking has enabled the company to supply, configure and
integrate open information systems using state-of-the-art products from
its vendors and custom software from the MRI development labs.
HP is the world's leading supplier of UNIX-system-based computers and is
the second largest mid-range computer systems vendor in the U.S. HP also
is the third largest computer supplier in the U.S., with revenues in
excess of $12 billion for its 1992 fiscal year.
Hewlett-Packard Company is an international manufacturer of measurement
and computation products and systems recognized for excellence in
quality and support. The company's products and services are used in
industry, business, engineering, science, medicine, and education in
approximately 110 countries. HP has 93,100 employees and had revenue of
$16.4 billion in its 1992 fiscal year.
